He graduated in Physics in 1993 from the University of Salento with a thesis on Metal-Organic Vapor Phase Epitaxy (MOVPE) of II-VI compounds. After obtaining his Ph.D. in Physics from the same University in 1998, he continued as a post-doctoral researcher, focusing on the MOVPE growth of III-V nitride compounds.

In 1999, he became a post-doctoral researcher at the University of Parma under the Italian Institute for Material Physics (INFM), where he established a MOVPE laboratory. He also assumed responsibility for the epitaxial growth activities within the Physics & Technology of III-V Semiconductors research group.

In 2002, he transitioned to an INFM researcher role, conducting MOCVD studies on phosphides and arsenides for micro-optoelectronics. Additionally, he contributed to teaching Materials Science and Technology courses at the University of Parma.

In 2007, he relocated to the INFM-MDM National Laboratory in Agrate Brianza, which later became the Institute for Microelectronics and Microsystems of the National Research Council of Italy (CNR-IMM). Here, as a CNR-INFM researcher, he established the Metalorganic Chemical Vapor Deposition (MOCVD) laboratory dedicated to chalcogenide materials for phase-change memories.

In 2008, he assumed a permanent position as a CNR researcher, supervising the MOCVD synthesis and electrothermal characterization of chalcogenide materials for phase-change memory (PCM) devices, topological insulators, and thermoelectric materials. From 2009 to 2019, he played a key-person role in the CNR-Numonyx/Micron/STMicroelectronics joint research activity on PCMs.

In 2020, he joined CNR-IMM in Rome, where he co-led the PCM group, dealing with the synthesis by RF-sputtering and characterization of phase-change materials for memory and neuromorphic devices.

In September 2023, he joined the Department of Chemical Science and Technologies at the University of Rome Tor Vergata, focusing on chemical synthesis techniques, including vapor-phase deposition of thin films and nanostructures on surfaces.

He contributed to and coordinated numerous research projects, particularly in the field of phase-change materials and nanostructures. Some of his roles include:

  • Key investigator for the MOCVD deposition in the EU Project SKYTOP, “Skyrmion-Topological insulator and Weyl semimetal technology” (2018-2023).
  • Principal CNR Investigator and Work Package leader in the EU Project BeforeHand, “Boosting Performance of Phase Change Devices by Hetero- and Nano-Structure Material Design” (2019-2022).
  • Coordinator of the EU Project SYNAPSE, “SYnthesis and functionality of chalcogenide NAnostructures for PhaSE change memories” (2012-2015).
  • Coordinator of the Cariplo project MONADS, “MOCVD growth and study of chalcogenide NAnowires for phase change DeviceS” (2010-2012).
  • Italian responsible for the Italian-Spanish bilateral project, “Synthesis and functional analysis of chalcogenide materials for phase-change memory (PCM) and nanopatterning applications” (2009-2010).

He is author of over 80 publications in international scientific journals.
