Enrico Traversa got his “Laurea” (Italian Doctoral Degree), Summa cum Laude, in Chemical Engineering from the University of Rome La Sapienza in 1986.

He joined the University of Rome Tor Vergata in 1988, where he is since 2000 a Professor of Materials Science and Technology. In the same University, from 2001 to 2008 he was the Director of the PhD Course of Materials for Health, Environment and Energy (now Materials for Sustainable Development).

From January 2018 to January 2024, he was the Science & Technology Counsellor of the Embassy of Italy in Tokyo. From April 2017 to 2023, he was The National Distinguished Professor at the School of Energy and Materials of the University of Electronic Science and Technology of China (UESTC), Chengdu, China. In 2013-2015, he was Professor of Materials Science and Engineering at the King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST), Saudi Arabia. From 2012 to 2017, he was the Director of the Department of Fuel Cell Research at the International Center for Renewable Energy, Xi’an Jiaotong University, China. From January 2009 to March 2012, he was Principal Investigator at the International Research Center for Materials Nanoarchitectonics (MANA) at the National Institute for Materials Science (NIMS), Tsukuba, Japan, leading a unit on Sustainability Materials. In 2010-2012 he was Adjunct Professor at Waseda University and at the University of Tokyo, Japan.

Prof. Traversa’s research interests are in nanostructured materials for environment, energy, and healthcare, with special attention to sustainable development. He is an author of more than 500 scientific papers (more than 360 of them published in refereed international journals) and 13 patents, and edited more than 30 books and special issues on journals. His papers were cited more than 23,000 times (more than 30,000 in Google Scholar), and his ISI h-index is 75 (77 in Scopus, 87 in Google Scholar) (January 2024).

Founding Editor-in-Chief of Materials for Renewable and Sustainable Energy. He is Fellow of the Electrochemical Society, of the European Ceramic Society, and of the European Academy of Sciences. He was elected in 2007 in the World Academy of Ceramics. He has received the Ross Coffin Purdy Award of the American Ceramic Society for the best paper on ceramics published in 2010, and the International Association of Advanced Materials (IAAM) Smart Materials Medal in 2014. He received in 2011 a “1000 Talent” Scholarship from the Government of China. In 2015, he was featured in trade cards by the Electrochemical Society (ECS) as one of the 50 most influential electrochemists all time (with Volta, Faraday, Ampère, Edison, etc.).
