HYDROGELS

The search for new biocompatible polymeric matrices for biomedical purposes (drug delivery systems, tissue substitutes, intelligent materials) has led to the obtainment in this laboratory of new networks based on poly(vinyl alcohol) PVA.

In this research we are developing new strategies to control the equilibrium properties and the dynamics of water entrapped in the polymeric matrices.

Pulsed low resolution NMR, solid state NMR, quasi-elastic neutron and light scattering, together with chemical modification of polymer chains are the main approaches used for studying these gel systems and to impart new characteristics to external stimuli.

Some of these matrices have been recognized as biomaterials suitable for vitreous replacement and investigations in this direction are in order.
